XeNonX

1st Anniversary/ Eulogy/Announcement by Anthony Barlow

If look back into the archives you’ll find that XeNonX was started as a lowly blog for a games forum just one year ago. Not for one minute did I realise that it would be this blog that propelled me into wanting a career in video games journalism. Sure, I knew I wanted to write and I knew a hell of a lot about games. That’s why the blog was created. What I didn’t realise is how much more it would come to mean.

As the months passed the XeNonX comminity grew and the blog became something that, occassionally, members would read. Then it fell apart, a stupid, yet poignant argument split the group into two ‘facttions’ leaving myself and Ad’s the task of managing the forum ourselves or shutting up shop. After a few failed attempts at keeping it going we called it quits, but the blog remained and grew.

The blog became it’s own thing. We began to concentrate on real games news and move on from our old forum roots.

We got to April and the release of GTA IV, we began to count down the days until release and soon after my PS3 broke. Turning the countdown into, pretty much, what I was doing without it. We started to do regular features like the PlayStation Store Update and What Games Do You Game. There were also many failed attempts at new features (there are to this day). We also saw the release of the new PlayStation Store and the Metal Gear Online beta was released. We also welcomed some of our ‘old friends’ back into the fold from the XeNonX days, however this was shortlived after a tirade of daft comments (and multiple deletions)  from them we split once again.

May came around and brought with it fresh rumors of in game XMB, a new special edition PlayStation 3 (gun metal). I had more PS3 trouble and focussed on a backlog of older games, none of which were ever finished. BioShock was confirmed for the PS3 (finally).

Another new, regular, feature began in June. ‘This/Next Week In Rock Band’. After my swift acquisition of Rock Band I decided this needed addressing. E3 came and went and we had our first liveblog, videos came to the U.S. but we’re still waiting in Europe. Metal Gear Solid 4 was released and I swiftly went into hibernation until I finished it. There were still some good posts though :). We had rumors of a PS3Mote, but that never surfaced.

Moving into July we got news of Uncharted trophies, platunum games, Bionic Commando rearmed and a hell of a lot of LittleBigPlanet info.

August brought news of TrICO, the £2 screensaver Linger In Shadows and much more. There was, as their always is, rumors on firmware and Home. As well as a lot of stuff announced during the lull. We eagerly awaited what the end of the year would bring. August also saw the introduction of a new editor, Steve. This helped me out a lot. Cheers. Our reviews started here too, I think we were gaining some kind of credibility thanks to appearances on N4G and Kotaku.

September saw the post count step up considerably with the ammount of news going up increasing each week. At this point I thought we were onto something go0d. Develoepers were interested in talking to us and overall I felt we were doing really well. The Killzone 2 beta began and everyone was eagerly awaiting keys. We got our first video courtesy of Ryan Gray, who we’d just brought on as a contributing editor (he’s now a regular). Facebook was the word as Darren Uddenbeg joined the crew. Burnout got it’s long awaited trophy patch and everything was going pretty damn well. We were introduced to Ad’s as a full editor, king of comments he may be but his addition to the writing staff once again lifted the pressure a little. We had an editorial team!

October saw Harmonix announce a game based on The Beatles music libarary. The release of Sony’s next big thing was October too. LittleBigPlanet finally hit shelves under somewhat extrenuous circumstances. We also saw MotorStorm 2 released in the first of a slew of cool stuff hitting the PS3. Chimera invaded Los Angeles and the trophy whoring continued. We also brought in Ryan Gray and Giancarlo Feltrin, who helped take the weight off my shoulders a hell of a lot. Original content was more than introduced too as we started to gather speed and views.

By November we’d started to get interviews with people and developer Q&A’s. Things were going well and I was thinking expansion (more on that later).

December rolled around and the ammount of games released subsided. We got reports of TMNT Sackboys and the release of Dead Rising PS3. Writing news has now become an extension of me, I was now realised I was obsessed with writing.

January brought fresh thoughts of expansion and XeNonX invaded the U.S. of A. Pop Cap brought their games to PSN, Criterion announced more paid-dlc. The closure of EGM caused a swift interview to one of those laid off and reviews became more frequent.

And now we get to February. This month saw us posting news even more, gearing up for Killzone 2 and I had big dreams once again.

That was really self indulgent and I bet everyone hates it, I just wanted to show everyone how we’d progressed in one simple post. Sadly, XeNonX will be closing it’s doors today but don’t worry we’re still around.

Over the past two weeks or so (that’s why there’s been no posts) myself and Ad’s worked on an expansion. We tried to move XeNonX but the man kept us down. We’ve had to change the name, but the spirit is still there.

From here on our you can find us over at ThePlayStatioNetwork. The new site which keeps XeNonX alive. We’ve got a great new layout and hopefully a new chunk of credibility. You didn’t really think we were gonna go just like that did ya.

So go on, go forth and check out www.theplaystationetwork.com. We’ll be moving this domain to redirect there soon. On behalf of the team, and i’m sure they’ll agree. It’s been a pleasure writing here and I hope you’ll follow us to the new site. We’ve got some cool stuff coming up over the next few weeks including a review of Killzone 2 and more. So please, do it.

Thanks, Anthony Barlow editor in chief of XeNonX & ThePlayStatioNetwork.

Anyone else please feel free to add to this or comment below, cheers, Anthony.

Yes it was self indulgent but I needed to give it a good send off. Thanks peeople. As Garnett Lee would say, we are….ghost!

Now that i’m back (and in somewhat of a fit state to write again) normal service will be resumed. Hopefully coming up this week will be reviews of Savage Moon (finally!), Cuboid and Magic Ball.

The picture you see above is of Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel, as made famous by The Warriors. It’s good to be back guys, ok then i’ll crack on.

Hey people, as you’re reading this i’ll be sat on a plane bound for New York City. Don’t fret, whilst i’m away the site will still remain as updated as ever, as Ad’s and the crew should be keeping you up to date with all the news from the world of PlayStation. I’ll be back on January 26th and order will be resumed (only if order is lost, of course).

I might be able to Twitter occassionally so you can keep ‘up to date’ with my goings on if you really need too by going to www.twitter.com/XeNonXAnthony.

I’ll see you all when I get back, bye!

Thank You! by Anthony Barlow

I really meant to do this a hell of a lot earlier than I am doing, but nevertheless I really wanted to do something like this to share my appreciation for everyone that helped me during the year 2008. Since we began in late February last year, XeNonX has grown from a forum off shoot into it’s own entity. Even with the demise of the forum, the site still remains and has gained a hell of a lot of new stuff, as well as (hopefully) keeping that informal feel that I amied for when this started all those months ago. I never imagined that this little site, once known as The XeNonX Blog would grow into the thing it is today. Sure, I wanted it to be successful and for us to be a go-to site for videogame news but I never, not in my wildest dreams, thought that we would grow this much, especially in this short a time. This success is due to a number of things, one of those being the help from the editors and people within the industry. It’s their help and dedication that has made XeNonX what is it is today, and as editor in chief I, personally, feel the need to thank everyone for all their help and support. Thankyou. Hit the jump for the list of people. Continue reading

2008 has come and gone, but due to some minor (and major) complications XeNonX’s GOTY (game of the year) awards got a little delayed. Well it’s January 12th and you’ve finally got ’em. All of the editors here at the site dropped in their nominations  late last year and now the voting has been completed, i’m happy to bring you our results. Check out the winners after the jump. What Games Do You Game?: The ‘What We Really Played’ Edition by Anthony Barlow

[By Anthony]

It’s back, What Games Do You Game has made the jump into 2009 and, like the last post, there’s a bit of a twist. During the break Ad’s thought of a, frankly, ingenious idea of doing a ‘What We Really Played’ edition. Thinking this was a great idea I jumped on it’s proverbial bandwagon and, well, now this idea is reality. We’ve got the majority of the crew together with the omission of Steve and Giancarlo. Ok then, hit the jump to see what we were really been playing over the break. Continue reading

I’d just like to wish all of our readers a Happy New Year. I hope that 2009 is a good year for everyone and judging by the lineup early on in the year it should be a good one for us gamers.

We’ll hopefully be trying to predict the future in a feature coming up in the next few days. We’ve also got an interview with EPOS games’ Olof Gustafsson, talking about the recently released Crash Commando as well as a review of the aformentioned title. Hopefully the competitions will begin again in the new year too, so there should be some good stuff on offer.

Other than that, on behalf of myself and the team, I want to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope that the year 2009 will be a prosperous one.

It’s been one hell of a year and there’s been some really amazing games released in 2008 and I feel that XeNonX should honour these fine pieces of art (yeah, I said it) in the first annual ‘XeNonX Game Of The Year Awards’. I will post the nominees for each category now, but due to complications the winners will not be announced until early January (that’s my fault). Each genre (except RPG’s because of the lack of them) have a category, which all have five nominations, except for the main award which has ten. Hit the jump for the nominations. Continue reading

After a whole five days worth of break the XeNonX crew are back to provide our daily commentary on the day’s news. We’ll be posting a few things over the next few days, but we won’t be fully up and running until after the new year.

Hope you all had a good Christmas and it’s good to be back.

Hey people, it’s time for the XeNonX cerew to go on break. Although we are people of the internet, we need to spend time with loved ones, open presents and gorge on food too ya know.

We’ll be back on December 29th with our Game Of The Year Nominees and will be fully up and running in the new year. Of course if anything major occurs during our time off (like Microsoft going bump, Wii’s killing Miyamoto) then of course we’ll be there covering it for you guys.

Other than that, i’d just like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays) and we’ll see you soon.

Bye for now.

Due to some unforseen complications, the XeNonX GOTY (Game Of The Year) nominations have had to be put back a few days. We were originally meant to announce the nominees today, but said circumstances have caused us to move the post back until December 29th. I do appologise for this, to compensate i’ll be putting my review of Astro Tripper up today as well as a few more things too (hopefully), so please stick around folks.

My Latest Project – Colin Hay ‘Overkill’ by Anthony Barlow

As, well, probably none of you will know, I am not a full time ‘video games journalist’. I am a college student and this occasionally gets in the way of things such as writing for the site. For the past three months i’ve been working on the above video. I, with my fellow cohorts, have been working pretty much none stop to make sure this video makes it out before the deadline (10:30 Friday 12th December). This has lead to some setbacks in the amount of news and features on the site, for that I apologize. I do hope you recognize why I have had to put this project first, but also want to say that XeNonX has my full attention from here on out.

I realise by now that most of the people reading this think i’m either a wuss or full of shit. I’ll leave it for you do decide, but whilst you do, why not stick on the video and well…I don’t know, do something I guess.
