Rumor: PS2 Emulator Coming For PS3? by Anthony Barlow

Older PlayStation 3 consoles play PS2 games, newer ones don’t. I have often wordered why Sony took this feature away from those who adopted their black box of joy late, now it seems they might be putting it back in.

The rumor comes from none other than NeoGaf. User Meph apparently spoke to a Sony representative about the issue with backwards compatability and was told that Sony may be willing to buy PS2 emulation software from a third party.

Of course there is no evidence to back up Meph’s claim, but it dosen’t seem too unlikely. I know a lot of people who’d love to see Sony put this back in, if only for games like Persona 4.

Another one we’ll have to wait and see on. It’d be nice if Sony were to do it though.

Sony have today announced that they’ll be bringing the music of Sweedish pop superstars ABBA to their singstar franchise. ABBA’s music will be coming to both PS2 and PS3 versions of Sony’s popular kareoke franchise. They said:

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with ABBA to bring their tracks to SingStar this Christmas,” said David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “The popularity of this iconic band continues year after year, and we know SingStar fans will be delighted to add this selection of classics tracks to their SingStar collection.”

The game is set to be released this winter. Hit the jump for the full press release. Continue reading

PS2 Software Emulation On The Way? by Anthony Barlow

Anything after the 60GB PS3 in Europe won’t play PlayStation 2 games. It’s crap, especially as there’s a ton of great games people haven’t played on that system. The older games might look a bit crappy on a high def television when they’re played on a PS3 but it’s still nice to be able to play games from your collection on one console. Hit the jump for me speculating it up.

Great News For SingStar Fans by Anthony Barlow

The PS3 version of SingStar is about to get a massive content update thanks to Sony and a PS3 firmware update. Sony announced today at Leipzig that a new firmware update would allow players to rip songs from the PS2 versions of SingStar and import them into into the PS3 game.

David Reeves didn’t give any info away but it definitely seems like a great step forward for Sony and might make PS2 owners want to upgrade to a PS3 for this sequel. Which has got to be the thinking behind this.

Not of too much interest to me but it’s nice for all those SingStar fans out there.

Rock Band 2 – Tweak Away Harmonix, Tweak To Your Hearts Content by Anthony Barlow

Whoo more Rock Band 2 info sweet! Harmonix have said that they’re latest iteration of the franchise is NOT about innovation (what!) it’s about tweaking the existing concepts (few, saved) and adding to them (better) to try and make the Rock Band experience a hell of a lot better (nice!). From the sounds of things these improvements will definitely make the game better.

With the disc content (84 songs) and the rest of the RB1 songs and DLC available that brings the count to a massive 200 songs. Now it’d be a real ball ache trying to find a song but no Harmonix have fixed this with some new sorting features. You will now be able to sort songs by artist, album and decade. Clicking these headers will bring you into a sort of ‘playlist’ kinda thing where you can see everything in that category (i.e. David Bowie takes you onto songs by David Bowie).

Instrument wise there’s no big changes to the microphone (makes sense), but the guitar and drums have both had both had some tweaks done to them. The guitar (as you might have seen) now has a new wooden look to it and now has an auto calibration system to measure the delay and adjust the settings accordingly.

At first look the drums don’t look that different, but when the extras are added they look a lot cooler. The new cymbals can be added and used if you want but they aren’t needed. You can plug in an add-on and make the controller into a fully working electronic drum kit (which, I guess is sweet if you want/need that). Other additions include a better bass pedal and a new ‘drum tutor’ feature which will get newbies (and me) into drumming.

One of the best soundlng new features is ‘Battle Of The Bands’ which basically pits two bands around the world against one another in online challenges. The challenges can range from playing certain songs/setlists or playing songs by certian artists. The challenges will be updated daily and if i could get another two people together then it’d be legen…wait for it…dary (sorry I went a bit Barney Stinson back there).

There have been some tweaks to the ‘Band World Tour’ mode too. The ability to hire staff has been added which will help how much money the band makes and how many fans your band gets which adds a new element of strategy to the main campaign. Not only that but Harmonix have added the new ‘no fail’ mode (pretty self explanatory) and a new ‘jukebox’ mode where you pick the band and the songs and watch it unfold (ok…then it sounds a little meh but it could be cool).

Thanks to Kotaku for the pic of Harmonix’s event.

All of the tracks are master recordings which is sweet, no bad covers!

This looks like a bit of a mix of both of the leaked tracklists from earlier this month. I really quite like it, there’s some good stuff here just a shame there’s no ‘Bad To The Bone’. It’d be some great DLC though. I think the highlights here are Motorhead’s ‘The Ace Of Spades’, Billy Idol’s ‘White Wedding Pt. 1’ and The Who’s ‘Pinball Wizard’ (I wondered why it wasn’t in this months DLC pack). Obviously there’s some other really good stuff plus that rumor about the downloadable disc thing was also true with Harmonix & MTV stating that “almost” all songs from the original  Rock Band tracklist could be transferred. I hope they don’t loose any of the good ones. The press release also goes on to say that to transfer the songs will require some sort of fee to unlock the content. This unlock will apparently be “under $5”, which I guess is ok would’ve been better not to pay though.
