It has been one of the major things PS3 users have wanted since the console launched and now we’ve almost got it. Gaming Age posted yesterday that the long awaited in game XMB will be featured in the latest PS3 firmware 2.40. This firmware will apparently be released “sometime in June”. I’m guessing the 12th.
As well as this report a video has surfaced on YouTube apparently of this feature working. Not only that but it is an apparent leak from 2K Games the developers of BioShock. The video clearly shows the XMB over the BioShock start screen with the person clicking on a disc icon on the XMB which returns him/her to the game.
Gaming Age have stated that the update will feature universal friends lists and in-game messaging along with “surprises”. I personally have wanted custom soundtracks for a while now so I’m hoping they’re in.

Yep, according to UK newspaper ‘The Telegraph’ an intelligence services contractor called SITE had come accross screens of a desroyed Washington D.C. from Bethesda’s highly anticipated ‘Fallout 3’ believing them to be images created by terrorists. According to the newspaper the group did find the images on an Al-Queda afilliated website. It has now emerged that SITE new the images were from a video game. I’m calling B.S. on that one.
However it is ironic that SITE are based in Bethesda, MD
Konami have said that the new limited edition ‘Gun metal’ PS3 is not just a PS3 with a new paintjob. Apparently the body is different on both the console and the controller to give it that gun metal matte look.

The UK had a bit of a crap week this week but the U.S. didn’t exactly have a good one. I’m not a fan of ‘The Cars’ and i’ve got the two budget Rock Band tracks so that saves me a few quid. I’ll be checking out some of the trailers but other than that a pretty crappy week. Super Puzzle Fighter II: Turbo HD Remix did show up this week almost One Year after it debuted on the U.S. store. It’s pretty good, but i doubt i’ll pick it up at that price.

After looking over the Guitar Hero World Tour coverage i’ve actually decided NOT to buy it. Surprising as it is I don’t want to buy that game at least not the bundle. I don’t want another microphone and especially not another drum kit. It definitely looks like GH4 won’t let the Rock Band drums work with it, not good for Activision. I might buy the disc and just play guitar and let my brother do vocals but I don’t want another drum kit frankly getting dusty in the corner.
I can see this being another big issue for Activision and I can see them cracking under the pressure. I hope they do ‘cos I want to get the most out of the game.

Yeah my ‘new’ PS3 has just been delivered and is currently downloading/installing Firmware 2.35. I’ve got the feeling that i’ll loose all of my stuff again which ain’t good. Glad to get it back I really want to beat GTA IV before Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out (June 12th). Good to be able to watch blu-ray’s again too.
I’ve been mulling this over for a couple of days now. After playing the brilliance that is Echochrome on the PS3 i got this super mad idea that the game could be deemed racist. I doubt that it is, but if you look at my points you’ll get why I thought this. Before I do this I will say that I like the game and do not think it’s racist i’m just surprised that no one has jumped on this game the way they did RE5. I do concede that this game is much less mainstream and is not an established brand name which could be why but whatever.
- Echochrome is set in an all white universe with a white ‘manakin’ as the protagonist.
- You make progress in the game by solving puzzles involving walking up to black ‘manakins’ and making them dissapear. This is seen as an accomplishment.
It might just be me with my analytical media student head on but when you look deeper into this game it’s surprising what you find.
The rational explanation for Echochrome (like it needs one) is that white and black are complete opposites and these colors fit the simplistic and stylized feel of the game.
So yeah there’s to ways to look at the game hopefully most people see the rational explanation as the right one. We don’t need people shouting about a racist PSN title.

Yeah so I was told by Sony ‘tech support’ that i’d receive my ‘new’ PS3 today delivered by DHL or somethin like that. Alas, they have failed and after phoning Sony around 7pm I found out that the delivery company had said that they had attempted delivery. If they’d have attempted it i’d have seen ’em as I was said in the bleedin living room all day waiting. Anyway, it’s gonna be here tomorrow apparently. On a good note the guy on the phone said that Sony would be replacing my copy of “Everybody’s Golf World Tour” after a month of waiting.
I’m gonna leave with some Lee Evans and basically what happens when you ask for a delivery time from good ol’ Sony.
I really need to get a regular spot for this. Not posted this feature up in a while, mostly because of exams and a dead PS3 but nonetheless I will, as of next week, be putting WGDYG? up on a Friday. Thought it’d be best there as it allows me (and you the readers) a full week of gaming before putting the list up. I’ve once again not had a PS3 this week either, however I have had a PS2 and all of my PS3’s downloadable games so the list might be a bit eclectic but it’s here.
- Super Stardust HD – This game has been the one i’ve most played, and got better at, over the last week or so. I’m gonna reinforce my point that this game is one of the best downloadable games across all three platforms and that everyone and their mum should download it. Go on…do it now.
- Echochrome – Picked this up off the U.S. store this week and after a bit of head scraching and subsequently giving up i’m really having a ton of fun with this. The PSN might not have the widest range of downloadables but it definitely has some of the best. Another must buy for any PS3 owner.
- ICO – One of the true gem’s in the PS2’s crown ICO is a masterpiece and is definitely a must play. I know i’ve only just picked it up but it’s great.
- Metal Gear Solid – My fanboyism reached a new high (or low) this week when I went insane and bought a 1,000 yen PSN card just to buy this game. It’s a bit hard in Japanese but still amazing and is still, in my opinion, the greatest game to ever grace any console EVER.
Yeah today I picked up numbers 1 & 2 on my list of games I need to play. To my delight I accuired both ICO and Shadow Of The Colossus for a fee of £20. It might seem a little steep but according to various sources they’re some of the best games on the PS2 so I’m pretty happy with that. The guy in Gamestation didn’t seem to want to let either game go, his caressing of Shadow Of The Colossus sort of brought this to my attention.
Well if you’ve been following (I suspect you haven’t) then you’ll know that I am such a desperate and delusional Metal Gear Solid fanboy that I bought a 1,000 yen PlayStation Network Card from eBay and bought MGS1 off of the Japanese PlayStation store. After about an hour of playing I have come to the realisation that Snake’s codec is an integral part to the game. It actually tells me what to do next. I found this because the codec (even the subtitles) are Japanese! I did realise that some part , if not all of, the game would be in Japanese but what I didn’t expect was that all of the menus and other stuff would be in English. Only the credits and voice acting is in Japanese. Having no option to change the language is how I found MGS hard to play in Japanese.
Having said all that the game still holds up (to some degree) and would be pretty perfect to play on the PSP. I am planning on buying the English version of the game when it arrives on the U.K. or U.S. store. Here’s hoping it turns up on the U.S. store 1st as I’ve got some left over dollars and I get most of my PSP content from there.
Oh well, I guess I deserve it for being a fanboy. I don’t care though I can play MGS1 again!
I ‘borrowed’ my brothers PS2 yesterday just so I could watch some DVD’s. I’ve got a fair few to get through too. I’ve got some TV on DVD to watch as well as a good few movies, which i’m about to list because of my once again increasing boredom.

The PS2 is a trusty ol’ piece of kit. It might not play Blu-Ray’s or be a PS3 but it’s a good DVD player and until Thursday it’ll do pretty much fine. I might even go and pick up some of that backlog of games from the previous post and play em during the wait.
I’m dwelling on this a little too much now. I’ve been looking over what my daft little noggin has missed over the past few years and i’ve drummed up quite a list.

My ‘new’ PS3 recently received from Sony around three weeks ago has got a mild case of the death. The system still works, however it won’t read discs so that means I cannot play any of my PS3 games, Blu-Rays or DVD’s which really sucks. What sucks even more is that I now have a week off from college with no PS3 until Thursday! I can however play all of my downloaded games which doesn’t make it too bad. My PS3 dying was one of the main reasons that I decided to buy MGS from the Japanese store and Echochrome from the U.S. store (which is really cool). I will now get really good at Pixel Junk Monsters and Super Stardust HD, might play a bit of WarHawk too.
No countdown for this one or music dedications because basically I can’t be arsed and I haven’t become as attached to this one yet. Although I will add a nice bit of Python to the post. This is me and Sony customer services.
Here is the biggest example of how far I will go for Metal Gear Solid. As I reported for you earlier this week Metal Gear Solid was released on the Japanese Playstation Store without anyone notifying me (like they would anyway). I’m so obsessed with MGS that I have today bought myself a 1,000 yen Playstation Network Card just to buy this game. I have also committed myself to buying the English version of this game if/when it appears on one of the other stores. With the left over yen i’ll be downloading the expansion pack for Flow, once i get it.
