Pioneer have announced that the new 400GB blu-ray disc they’ve developed will work in current players. It was feared that the 16 layer disc would require a new kind of disc drive, thankfully that isn’t the case. The discs won’t be available until 2010, just in time for Kojima to take advantage of it.

PS3 Blu-Ray Bundles Hitting Stores by Anthony Barlow

Reports are coming in that a new, £299, PS3 bundle is hitting shelves (Europe only at the time of writing). It was thought that Sony might release a blu-ray only bundle before the Christmas period, but with the ammount of bundles currently on shelves it seemed unlikely. The new bundles contain the following:

  • 80GB PS3 Console
  • 1 x DualShock 3 Controller
  • 1x Blu-Ray Remote
  • 1x Blu-Ray Movie (I Am Legend/300)

I assume retailers will be offering up their own adaptations of this bundle too. It dosen’t sound like a bad deal for someone who just wants a PS3 for it’s movie playing capabilities. It seems Sony are making a big push for the Christmas period, but with the increasing credit crisis, the question is… will it work?

Getting More Than POP From Vending Machines :) by Anthony Barlow

Q: What comes out of a vending machine?

A: Drinks, Snacks, Blu-Rays, Games

What!? Games and Blu-Rays don’t come from vending machines. They will do by Christmas. Stuff is reporting that Sony and Universal have teamed up to create ‘POP’. ‘POP’ machines are “entertainment vending machines” which are to be “distributed across the UK”. The machines will apparently be put “in gyms, cinemas, universities and travel stations” this winter.

These machines will be selling PS3 games, DVD’s and Blu-Rays as well as offering direct downloads to your MP3/MP4 player or memory stick. Quite cool, although these machines have been available in the U.S. for some time.

I can certainly see these being a feature of town centres e.t.c. across the UK. If this is a success I can see Microsoft and Nintendo following suit.

Sony today announced that the people of Europe (like myself) will be getting two new PlayStation 3 bundles this autumn. The best of the two bundles will be dropping on the 10th of the month and will include an 80GB console, two DualShock 3 controllers and a copy of the highly acclaimed ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’. [By Steve M]

In a bit of blu-ray movie news, IGN have picked up on a comment made by a certain Peter Jackson that,

“We are working on a Blu-ray version of the LOTR trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won’t be this year.”

So next question for fans no doubt will be yes but which versions of the films?  If I was to be cynical for a moment I would expect the theatrical versions first, with the extended full monty versions at a later date, probably just in time for Christmas.
