Ok, so last year was hailed by the people at Sony as ‘The Year Of The PS3’ and sure it’s sales have grown and the number of people adopting the system has increased pretty rapidly, but still there was the complaint that “the PS3 has no games”. Last year saw the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, but even that didn’t convince many that Sony’s juggernaut of a console was worth dropping the cash on. I think that’s about to change. I’m about to put my neck on the line and say that 2009 will be officially ‘The Year Of The PS3’. Hit the jump to find out why. Continue reading

[By Anthony]

I’d just like to wish all of our readers a Happy New Year. I hope that 2009 is a good year for everyone and judging by the lineup early on in the year it should be a good one for us gamers.

We’ll hopefully be trying to predict the future in a feature coming up in the next few days. We’ve also got an interview with EPOS games’ Olof Gustafsson, talking about the recently released Crash Commando as well as a review of the aformentioned title. Hopefully the competitions will begin again in the new year too, so there should be some good stuff on offer.

Other than that, on behalf of myself and the team, I want to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope that the year 2009 will be a prosperous one.

Guerilla Games have confirmed that Killzone 2 will be hitting North America on February 27th with the release in Europe coming shortly after. A Sony representative told Eurogamer:

“We are targeting a similar timeframe for the release of Killzone 2 in the PAL regions.”

Sounds good to me and of course if the wait is too long, you can always import

Trophies Mandatory As Of January by Anthony Barlow

VideoGamer.com is reporting that ‘Trophies’ will be a mandatory inclusion on all PlayStation 3 games as of January. The site recieved confirmation of this from an SCEE representative, currently I cannot access the site and cannot provide the quote, which is dumb. I will update as soon as I can though.

This is a a good sign. Personally, I was getting a little sick and tired of wondering if companies would or wouldn’t be supporting trophies and it looks like, as of January, that’ll be a thing of the past. The sheer ammount of games that have added, or launched with, trophy support has been staggering. I think we can expect that most companies are putting them in at this point anyway, but it’s nice to see it being made mandatory. It looks like the ‘Trophy Patch’ is almost a thing of the past, come on Bethesda get working.

It looks like Capcom’s highly anticipated fighter Street Fighter IV might have a formal release date. Sadly, the game isn’t coming this year but it will be turning up mid-February. Allowing Capcom to miss the Christmas rush. The game is coming on the 17th in North America and a mere 3 days later in Europe (20th). Resi 5 in March, Street Fighter in Feb. It’s gonna be a hell of a Q1 for Capcom.

Mirrors Edge has now been, or is about to be, released in most territories. So now that we have the game EA and DICE feel it’s time to let loose some of the info about downloadable content for the game. The content will be released in early 2009 (January me thinks). A Sony rep had said that there would be PS3-exclusive downloadable content. It’s quite likely the content will come in the form of time trials but it would be nice to see EA add in some extra story chapters (apparently the story is a little ropey). Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see. I’m optimistic though. Then again it’ll probably be a skin pack 🙂 .
