Hideo Kojima Keynote At GDC by Anthony Barlow

[By Anthony]

It was announced yesterday that, for the first time ever, legendary game designer Hideo Kojima would be delivering a keynote speech at this year’s Game Developers Conference. The Metal Gear creator will apparently be focussing on conquering development obstacles with creative design, obviously using the Metal Gear series as reference.

Kojima’s speech, “Solid Game Design: Making The Impossible Possible”, will take place on Thursday March 26th from 10am – 12pm.

Is it me, or is this amazing news. To hear Kojima speak about anything would be cool, to hear him speak about game design, well that’d be amazing.

Possibly The Best Video Of ’09 Already? [Update] by Anthony Barlow

[By Anthony]

YouTube is a great place. Full of music videos, old movie clips, and people like UltraNeko. After a friend showed me a couple of her videos I have grown to hate this woman with, let’s just say, a passion.

For those who don’t know UltraNeko hosts a ‘show’ on YouTube called ‘Sadie’s Gaming Infection’. Which is usually horribly bad, but this week it was a little different.

Sure, the presence of UltraNeko herself was a little annoying (ahh the voice!) but she had with her a few very special guests.

…The cast of Metal Gear Solid 4, well some of them at least. Somehow UN had gotten them all together to do some Metal Gear Improv. Hit the jump and have a look. Continue reading

Yesterday LittleBigPlanet got patched up to version 1.06, which, well, seemed to make no improvements. Today MM have also given us so patchy goodness (?) with the V 1.07 update. This update just seems to add the ‘LittleBigStore’ to the game as well as some stuff involving the new Metal Gear content (including trophy list.)

At least Media Molecule are supporting it.

Earlier in the week it was revealed that more of the Metal Gear Solid 4 cast would be joining Snakeboy in LittleBigPlanet. On top of that it was also revealed that there would be new (paid-for) levels added via DLC, not bad. Well now we’ve got a release date and new screens. The packs are to be released on the 23rd of December, how nice som LBP Tactical Espionage Action for Christmas. Here’s those lovely screens. Regarde.

Word comes in from the interwebs that the recently revealed Metal Gear Solid Level Pack for LittleBigPlanet will contain new trophies. This will be the first piece of downloadable content to add trophies to the game and personally, I think it’s pretty cool. Seeing as we’ve gotten a good load of info about the pack, i’m sure it can’t be too far away. Hit the jump for the trophy list. Continue reading

Konami Teasing Next Metal Gear! – Not Coming To PS3? [Update] by Anthony Barlow

The image above has mysteriously turned up on the landing page for Kojima Productions.  The page contains nothing but the image above and the Konami logo, could this be a hint at the next Metal Gear game? Many people are speculating that the i could relate to DSi or that the ! could be something to do with Ac!d. There’s people also saying that the end logo is something to do with the PC and that the green is a reference to Microsoft. Bloody hell, that’s a hell of a lot being read into an image on a website, but I do agree it is strange. The exclamation mark is a symbol of the MGS franchise and seening as Kojima has said that he wanted to pass on the Metal Gear torch, so to speak. Maybe this ‘new guy’ wants to take Metal Gear in a new direction and on a new console.

The MGS fanboy inside me is raging at the moment, I would hate to see the next Metal Gear game not appear on PS3, especially if it was a continutation of the story in a major way. Come on Kojima, tell us, we need to know!

Konami have responded to VG24/7 about the recently released Metal Gear teaser on the Kojima Productions site. They’ve not said too much though only:

“I am afraid that Konami does not comment on speculation,”

The classic line, as crushing as it is for Metal Gear fans, it isn’t a denial.

Konami have released the 1.20 update for Metal Gear Online. The new patch adds support for the MEME pack as well as a few new things such as: the ‘headshot’s invalid lobby’ and ‘Stealth deathmatch’. This all sounds well and good, if only it was a better game. Hit the jump for the full list. Continue reading

Konami are still pumping out expansions for Metal Gear Online. The MEME pack, announced back at Leipzig, is to hit Japanese shores on November 25th. A combined pack of the GENE and MEME packs is also set to be released on the same day. I think MGO is a massive missed opportunity, there’s so many things it could’ve done to be better. It’d be nice to see a new, better version of the game. I doubt we’ll be seeing it soon though.

Old Snake, Sephiroth Invading LBP by Anthony Barlow

[By Anthony]

It looks like my wish has come true, there will be an Old Snake costume for my Sackboy in LittleBigPlanet. Media Molecule announced that Old Snake and Final Fantasy’s Sephiroth would be able to be recreated (in a smaller sackier fashion) in Media Molecule’s upcoming masterpiece.

There have been no other details revealed about when or at what price the characters will appear in the game, personally I think they’ll be available to download at launch, but that’s just me. We’re not even certain these wil be made available outside of Japan, although with their fanbases MM would be stupid not to.

You can see Sephiroth’s unveiling here

Hideo Kojima is a man of mystery, likes to be very vague when he’s talking about, well…pretty much anything. This week Kojima was interviewed by Kikizo who talked about games and the like as well as Kojima himself. One of the things that was found out is that Mr. Kojima turned 45 last Sunday (happy birthday dude) as well as talk of him being involved with future Metal Gear Solid titles. Kojima Talks About ‘New Snake’ by Anthony Barlow

According to Kojima himself MGS4 was Snake’s final mission but does this mean it was the last of the Metal Gear games to feature undoubtedly the greatest ever gaming character (yeah, take that Mario!)? Yep it was but Kojima says there could be a new ‘Snake’ for a new era. Thankfully Kojima explains himself:

The heroes in most animations and movies don’t age. They are often immortal. Snake, on the other hand, has aged with the times. I made him this way because of the unique characteristics of the game medium. Snake is a fictional character, but at the same time he represents the players themselves because of the interactive nature of games.

This is very different from other types of entertainment mediums in which you just watch or listen. Therefore, Snake’s memories become the players own journey. In that sense, I believe that interactive games are somewhat similar to live shows that reflect the signs of the times. Therefore, this allowed me the opportunity to bring the character of Snake to life and make the story more realistic by showing signs of his aging.

One decade has passed since the release of Metal Gear Solid. I believe that fans have shared these past 10 years with Snake. The final story of Snake equals closure for these fans. Therefore, the Snake that has existed over the past 10 years could have only existed during this time.

I would like you to think that this good-bye to Snake is a good-bye to this era and represents closure to your old self. If there ever were to be a new Snake (might have a different name), he will be a Snake for a new era.

Sounds good. You’ve gotta believe there won’t be another Metal Gear game to feature Snake. A remake of MGS1 would be really nice! Obviously Kojima wants to move on but do the fans? This one doesn’t think so.

Metal Gear Online – ‘Gene Expansion’ Dated & Priced For Europe by Anthony Barlow

Last week I posted about the forthcoming ‘Gene Expansion’ for Konami’s Metal Gear Online and now, I’ve got details. The ‘Gene Expansion’ is the first downloadable content pack for the game and will feature new maps, new characters, a new game mode and a new reward system.

The pack will hit the PSN on July 17th and will be priced at 9.99 EUR which is approximately £8 (I can see it being £7.99 but hopefully less). This is good news to people who actually play the game but to be honest I haven’t played it that much so i don’t think i’ll be buying it just yet.

1st MGO Expansion Details by Anthony Barlow

Konami have released some new details on an upcoming expasion for Metal Gear Online. It’s currently being dubbed the ‘Gene Expansion’ on Konami’s official site for the game. The pack will add some of the usual expected stuff from an add-on: Three new maps, two new characters (Meryl Silverburgh & “Akiba”) but some unexpected stuff is also to be included.

The expansion is yet to be priced but this unexpected stuff will include a ‘Survival Mode’, customisable female characters and a rewards shop to spend your in-game points.

It all sounds pretty cool. I wish they’d add more character slots that we didn’t have to pay for.

As I said the pack is yet to be priced but I can see it being around a fiver which ain’t too bad…I guiess.

Metal Gear Does Not Need A Movie Says David Hayter by Anthony Barlow
July 8, 2008, 10:21 pm
Filed under: Movie News | Tags: , ,

David Hayter has, this week, been talking about Metal Gear becoming a movie. Here’s what he had to say:

“Does it need a movie? No. Do people want to collect the money that would be made from a movie? Sure. [laughs] I think that any time that a property is as valuable as this one, they’re going to do it. It’s not a question of if there is a need for a movie, it’s a question of how do they insure that the movie is good, and worth watching”.

He goes on to say how he’d make it a movie you’d want to watch.

“I think, because of the scenes — there’s so much movie in every Metal Gear game — it’s like, well, do we really need to see a bunch more talking about Metal Gear? As a movie adapter myself, I would never take those scenes verbatim and put them up on screen; it wouldn’t make any sense. I mean, a lot of times it doesn’t make any sense in the game. But you’re sort of speaking a language that all of these fans would understand.

In a movie, you’re going to want, for the lack of a better term, a more American style of dialogue. Tighter scenes. Themes that aren’t quite as ambiguous, that speak more to Americans. You’re really watching a Japanese perspective of American military power, where as it would be interesting to me to see the American perspective on what American military power has become. Now it’s kind of dubious right now, so it’s an interesting time to sort of explore that.

If you’re going to do it well, do it. If you’re going to put out some piece of crap, then no. Nobody needs that. Why waste your two hours when you can waste 18 watching Metal Gear 4. [laughter] No, not waste. Not when you can add quality to your life by playing Metal Gear Solid 4″. [smiles]

It looks like if the guys making the movie don’t pick Hayter and the movie is a piece of crap then fans (like me) will say that they should have let Hayter do the script. If they do pick Hayter it might look like Hayter is running the show and might not let the producer/director make the movie how they want it.

I still think they should cast Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn L.O.T.R.) as Snake.
