With the announcement that SEGA are giving the PS3 the Yakuza touch for an upcoming bundle, it seems that themed bundles (and consequently PS3’s) will be flooding the Japanese market in 2009. Today Sony have announced that they will are putting together a ‘special’ bundle (Japan only) for Biohazard 5 (Resident Evil 5). The package includes the game, a DualShock controller and an 80GB PS3 console. The console itself has the Biohazard 5 logo on it and the word ‘Biohazard’ on the disc slot.

Personally, if I had to choose one of the two recent ‘special’ PS3’s I think I’d go with the Yakuza one, but that’s just me. I’m sure RE (or Biohazard) fans will love this.

Japan is getting Resident Evil 5 on March 5. Nice news to hear for the Japanese, but thats the tip of the iceberg for what else is coming their way. Japan will also get its own Limited Edition of the game, and this thing is serious. It will include (along with the game):

  • A 2GB USB drive modeled after the TRICELL vaccine as seen in Resident Evil 5
  • A 32-page hardcover art book
  • A BSAA carrying pack, as worn by Chris Redfield
  • And as you expected, it isn’t cheap. The Japanese will be paying ¥12,800 (about $134 or 103.967 EUR). But if your a hardcore Resident Evil fan and…speak Japanese, you could pick it up. It looks like a quality collection of memorabilia.

This one goes out to all you PS3 owning JRPG fans. The Japanese box art for Level 5’s highly anticipated game has been revealed. I’ve no idea if this will remain for the Western releases, but it does look quite nice.

Early adopters in North America (or those of us with North American copies) of LittleBigPlanet are getting some free downloadable content, you remember the Spacesuit and T-Shirt? Of course you do. Today it was announced that Japanese consumers will be treated to an Ape Escape themed Sackboy costume. The costume is of Piposaru, one of the key characters in the franchise.

I like the fact that Sony are cross promoting their games within LittleBigPlanet, Sony has loads of great characters they could turn into Sackpeople. A Nathan Drake Sackboy would be cool, complete with half-tucked shirt.

The Piposaru costume is currently only scheduled for release in Japan, but I can see it making it’s way onto every store as downloadable content. A remake of Snake vs. Monkey in LBP would be cool.

With Media Molecule’s masterpiece LittleBigPlanet only a mere two weeks away we’ve gotten word that the Japanese market is getting a pretty cool bundle. Sony is going to be bundling a copy of LittleBigPlanet with a DualShock 3 controller, which is a pretty cool (if unoriginal) idea.

The bundles will go on sale in Japan on October 30th (when the game is launched) and will be priced at 7980 Yen, which works out at about $79. Not a bad deal there, i’m sure there’ll be something similar for Western markets too.

Siliconera have pointed out that Konami have trademarked “Metal Gear Existence” with the Japanese Trademark database. Could this be a new Metal Gear game? I would love it if it was, but it’s unlikely. It’s more likely that ‘Existence’ would be a re-release like ‘Substance’ or ‘Subsistence’.

The name is all we have to go on at the minute but I think the second option is more likely. At the moment it’s just a rumor, maybe we’ll here something at TGS.

Sony have released the 2.43 firmware update for the PS3. You are not required to download it but you can download the rather trivial update by clicking the ‘ System Update’ icon in the XMB. Nothing special or for western audiences here this is basically just a few minor tweaks to the Japanese PlayStation Store. There’s not really much need to update, but if you’re like me and find firmware updates exciting (I honestly don’t) then go ahead and get it.

It could be an indication that we’re getting a more significant update in the future though.

Afrika, Sony’s safari-em-up, is being released in Japan this week and to promote the game they’re putting the game in hotel rooms. The Excel Hotel Tokyu in Haneda is running an Afrika themed promotion to help Sony promote their game, presumably to the mass market. Guests will get to check the game out on a massive screen to add to the virtual safari going experience.

Seems a little unessecary to me, although the game looks pretty cool. I do hope it gets released over here i’d like to check it out.

One of my most anticipated PSN titles has arrived on the Japanese PS Store and not only that it has a demo! I’m getting the full game tomorrow from the U.S. so i’m definitely downloading this later on. According to TheSixthAxis the demo is up now and according to commenters the demo is all in English so that’s good.

    It’s definitely worth checking out.

Here is the biggest example of how far I will go for Metal Gear Solid. As I reported for you earlier this week Metal Gear Solid was released on the Japanese Playstation Store without anyone notifying me (like they would anyway).  I’m so obsessed with MGS that I have today bought myself a 1,000 yen Playstation Network Card just to buy this game. I have also committed myself to buying the English version of this game if/when it appears on one of the other stores. With the left over yen i’ll be downloading the expansion pack for Flow, once i get it.
