Is That Rooney Or Roper? by Anthony Barlow

“Oh my god!”.I hear you cry “Barmelo is talking about the Wii” (other Nintendo shit is available) “the worlds gone all crazy and stuff”. Nope readers the world is not “all crazy and stuff” it’s just that I was browsing the IGN blog-o-sphere today and came across this.

According to IGN PlayStation editor Greg Miller, the new ‘All Play’ mode in the Wii version of FIFA Soccer 09 makes Manchester United star Wayne Rooney’s Mii (below) look like, IGN’s very own EIC (editor in chief) of the PlayStation team, Chris Roper (above).

To an extent I have to agree. I do hate what EA are doing with this ‘family friendly’ Wii stuff, but I guess they have to make everything appeal to Ninty fans and make it look like Mario. Ah Well.

More negative comments ahoy!

Madden Soundtrack – Is Anyone Really Bothered? Not Me by Anthony Barlow

Well EA announced the full tracklisting for the latest itteration in their highly successful Madden series today and I, unlike most people out there, couldn’t give a toss. EA have releaed a press release talking about how important the Madden series is and how:

“Madden NFL revolutionized the industry by making music of multiple genres – from both established acts and brand-new artists – an essential emotional component of the videogame experience and the NFL season itself… Not only have we changed the gaming culture forever, we continue to move the needle musically for millions of people around the world. Madden NFL will always be recognized as the game that made the music matter in videogames.”

It’s a bit of a slow day news wise so here’s what i’m reduced to talking about a really quite boring stop-start American sport’s game. I have played the Madden franchise multiple times before and can say that it’s hard to get through one match without wanting and wishing you could fall asleep in an instant or maybe have your eyes raked out because it’d be more of a thrill. (rant over…for now).

Madden is a really big deal in the US but i’m from the UK. Why dosen’t our premiere sports game (obviously FIFA) get a massive launch party and have masses of people filling the streets of major cities? I just don’t get it.

I’ll have to be all professional now so here’s the full tracklist for Madden 09’s soundtrack:

Airbourne Stand Up For Rock ‘N Roll
Busta Rhymes feat. Linkin Park We Made It
Disturbed Inside The Fire
Franz Ferdinand Lucid Dreams
From First To Last Worlds Away
Gym Class Heroes I’m Home
Hollywood Undead Undead
In Flames The Mirror’s Truth
Innerpartysystem Don’t Stop
Izza Kizza Millionaire
K’NAAN ABC’s
Kardinal Offishall feat. Lindo P Burnt
Kidz In The Hall Blackout
KOVAS Wax On, Wax Off
Mindless Self Indulgence Never Wanted To Dance
Rev Theory Hey Yeah
Senses Fail Wolves At The Door
Shinedown Devour
The All-American Rejects The Real World (Demo)
The Fashion Like Knives
The Offspring Hammerhead
Trivium Into The Mouth Of…We March
Tyga Diamond Life
Underoath Desperate Times, Desperate Measures
Wale feat. Southeast Slim Breakdown
Young Dre The Truth feat. Good Charlotte Workin’

I do have to admit they’ve got some good songs in there but a whole press release just for this? Please.

I’ve got a feeling this post’s going to generate some negativity from commenters. Oh well, bring on the mob.

Lost Planet Movie Almost Ready To Go Says Solid Snake Himself by Anthony Barlow

More David Hayter news now and for some unknown reason I didn’t know he was penning the script for a move adaptation of Lost Plantet (probably because I don’t give a rat’s arse about Lost Planet). According to Mr. Hayter himself a deal with Warner Brothers is almost confirmed and is “just closing” but isn’t quite confirmed yet.

This is good news for fans of the Lost Planet franchise. Hayter has already written screenplays for X-Men which obviously makes him understand the type of culture surrounding games and such. Not only that he seems to like Lost Planet a fair bit too.

Hayter said: “There is gap in Hollywood between people who write good movies and those who appreciate good video games,” The voice of (undoubtedly) the best video game character ever (you can quote me on that). Hayter said he tries “to make an effort to take the essence of the game, keep as much of that as possible, and still put it into a proper film structure.”

With Solid Snake’s scriptwriting this movie does intrigue me now but not so much that i’ll be researching the Lost Planet franchise like some over eager recluse just to swot up on the lore of the thing. Although the game did always look pretty cool if it comes down to a tenner I might just pick it up.

Fallout 3 – More New Announcments & New Screens – (Canibals, Sex & Slaves) by Anthony Barlow

Bethesda’s latest big game Fallout 3 has had some more new stuff announced for it earlier this week. I am really excited about this game and can’t wait for it to be released, hopefully this year. The guys at Bethesda have put together a mass of Q&A stuff. They talk about everything from killing kids and addiction along with some other stuff but it’s making it sound really cool and immensely deep. I’ve took some of the better questions from the thing so you can have a look of them and get even more excited.

1) Which of the following, if any, will be featured in Fallout3; Romance, Sex, Homosexuality, Nudity, Prostitution, Slavery, Cannibalism, Children, Child killings, drugs, addictions? And of the things that won’t be featured, can you explain why they won’t be included in the game?

It touches on most of those. Slavery, children, drugs and addiction more than the others, as those factor for into the setting more. In regards to nudity and child killings, no, it features neither of those, as they don’t really add to the flavor of the game (I’ll get into children in the next question more). I think if you look at Fallout 1, and the footprint it has with the topics you ask about, Fallout 3 is pretty much the same, in that it features the types of things you mention at about the same rate, no more, no less. Drugs and drug addiction play a larger role perhaps, as it’s a key gameplay device. I think the heart of this question is “has the harshness and maturity of the world of Fallout 3 been tempered from the earlier games?” and I can certainly say “No, it hasn’t been.”

10) How advanced will the AI of NPC’s be this time around? Are they really going to have a life? Speaking to other NPC’s in a logical manner, traveling and trading with/in faraway places, Submitting to the player rather than fighting if they know, or think, they’re no match for him?

I wish I could answer with a number, like “it will be 17 advanced.” AI is difficult to define, the NPCs certainly appear much smarter than our previous stuff, by a lot. Much of that is us giving them better data, massaging what they do so the player gets to see more of it. We added a lot of animations, so people in town are doing more. They “seem” to be interacting with the world in a more realistic manner, but that usually means going up to something and playing an animation. It can be something really simple, like we added “lean against wall”. It’s funny how something that small can give life to a person. They walk into a space, and just lean against the wall, arms folded. Like Oblivion, we use our Radiant AI system, so most of the NPCs eat, sleep, work, etc. I think we take it for granted now, but it’s pretty great to have that level of control. We’ve also done a lot to the conversation system, which makes them seem a lot smarter, but again, that’s better data, not a new system.

On the technical side we spent most of our time doing an all new pathfinding system. Morrowind/Oblivion use nodes for pathing and Fallout uses a navmesh. This is the difference between an NPC having a valid point to stand on (node) versus an area to stand in, or walk around (mesh). You can do much more sophisticated actor movement and behavior with a navmesh, and I think you’ll see the results onscreen, especially when the bullets start flying. The actors do a great job of finding cover and using the space well, something we could never have done with pathnodes.

In terms of the NPCs traveling around, many travel around town, and some travel the wasteland. There are a few caravans in the game that go from town to town trading. Radiant AI handles something like that really well.

Lastly, as far as submitting to a more powerful foe, yes they do that, in that they run away. If they’re overmatched, they holster their weapon, flee and try to hide. While this sounds cool on paper, it’s often not fun at all, and we’ve ended up really dialing that back, because it gets really annoying really fast, to have people run away all the time. The main faction that still acts like this are the Raiders, the others don’t do it so much.

I’ve stuck some of the screens in there for you to drool over. Dosen’t it look (and sound) really cool. I believe this is currently playable at E3. I’d be great to be there, being a real journo and all that.

Metal Gear Does Not Need A Movie Says David Hayter by Anthony Barlow
July 8, 2008, 10:21 pm

David Hayter has, this week, been talking about Metal Gear becoming a movie. Here’s what he had to say:

“Does it need a movie? No. Do people want to collect the money that would be made from a movie? Sure. [laughs] I think that any time that a property is as valuable as this one, they’re going to do it. It’s not a question of if there is a need for a movie, it’s a question of how do they insure that the movie is good, and worth watching”.

He goes on to say how he’d make it a movie you’d want to watch.

“I think, because of the scenes — there’s so much movie in every Metal Gear game — it’s like, well, do we really need to see a bunch more talking about Metal Gear? As a movie adapter myself, I would never take those scenes verbatim and put them up on screen; it wouldn’t make any sense. I mean, a lot of times it doesn’t make any sense in the game. But you’re sort of speaking a language that all of these fans would understand.

In a movie, you’re going to want, for the lack of a better term, a more American style of dialogue. Tighter scenes. Themes that aren’t quite as ambiguous, that speak more to Americans. You’re really watching a Japanese perspective of American military power, where as it would be interesting to me to see the American perspective on what American military power has become. Now it’s kind of dubious right now, so it’s an interesting time to sort of explore that.

If you’re going to do it well, do it. If you’re going to put out some piece of crap, then no. Nobody needs that. Why waste your two hours when you can waste 18 watching Metal Gear 4. [laughter] No, not waste. Not when you can add quality to your life by playing Metal Gear Solid 4″. [smiles]

It looks like if the guys making the movie don’t pick Hayter and the movie is a piece of crap then fans (like me) will say that they should have let Hayter do the script. If they do pick Hayter it might look like Hayter is running the show and might not let the producer/director make the movie how they want it.

I still think they should cast Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn L.O.T.R.) as Snake.

Metal Gear Online Patched – Brings New Modes! by Anthony Barlow

It was rumored earlier this week but yep, MGO has been patched bringing in two new game modes for players to get to grips with. The first new mode is ‘Team Sneaking’ which is basically a team based version of the ‘Sneaking’ mode already in the game. This now does not just let Snake be invisible but one whole team. The other new ‘mode’ is the ability ho have headshots only matches with players being punished for non-headshot kills.

I guess that’s pretty cool. I still haven’t played much MGO everyone seems to be off playing Battlefield: BC. Hopefully this new stuff will tempt them, I doubt it though.

Rock Band 2 – Wireless Drums Confirmed! by Anthony Barlow

In order to keep up with Guitar Hero’s recent peripheral changes Harmonix have responded by providing Rock Band players to purchase a wireless drum kit. I personally will not be buying these drums (i won’t be buying any more drums) I assume that they’ll replace the wired ones when Rock Band 2 releases in September. I presume there’ll be a new bundle then? It’s EA so yeah it’s almost a guarantee.

The drums have been given a tentative date of September 14th. Could this possibly be when the game releases? (for 360 at least 😦 )

2.41 Released Fixes Problems – Sony Respond by Anthony Barlow

Yeah, apparently it was meant to hit “midweek” (when has Tuesday been midweek?!) but it’s here now and among the fixes it was meant to bring it has also updated the look of the platinum trophy (above). Rather than being a crown the new trophy is a silver coloured spherical thing which I guess looks better.

Along with releasing this firmware Sony have responded to the apparent problems with their 2.40 firmware.

For those users who have updated to version 2.40 and have experienced the problem that XMB™(XrossMediaBar) is not appearing, or no images are displaying on the screen, please contact Customer Service.

We have confirmed that for those users who have successfully updated to the version 2.40 and are able to activate the PS3 system, this problem will not occur on your PS3.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your understanding and continued support.”

So Sony have now responded and made it better again. We now get true platinum trophies too. Cool!
