I did say hopefully, didn’t I? Anyway, it looks like Europe won’t be getting video downloads on their PS3’s in 2008 at all. David Reeves of Sony has announced that PAL territories won’t be getting a video download service this year.

This will not come to the PAL markets this year, but Sir Howard Stringer has made the commitment that non-games will come to all regions in due course and it will. The dates for video content will come later this year. For us, and I think you appreciate most of you European, that local content is important, and that’s what working on right now.

It suck’s, and it sucks bad. It’s probably legal stuff and, although my predictions are usually crap, I’m guessing we’ll see it Q1 2009.

I thought this might be the case earlier today and now it has been confirmed. Sony’s new video store has been region locked to allow users in the United States only. I was hoping I could get some cheap rentals but it looks like i’ll have to wait for the store to come to us in Europe.

This is not good but then again, blu-rays are (mostly) region locked so why didn’t I see this coming?

Hopefully we’ll see it soon, but for now there’s always proxies :).

Eric Lempel announced yesterday at E3 that Sony’s video download service would go live last night. Apparently it did but for me over here in the UK it didn’t and it dosen’t look like I can access the American one either. I can see the big advert on the PS Store for it but nothing happens.

Have Sony now taken to region locking? Damn you (for now) Lempel damn you!

Answers on a postcard please people (or maybe just in the comments section).

Sony seem to have held some sort of event in Japan today there’s not too much of interest on the PlayStation front but these shots have come out of the event which made up part of a presentation by Kaz Hirai. Basically these images finally show Sony’s plans for a video download service. It sounds cool in theory, but will anyone use it? That is the question. There was also a look at how Sony want to roll out this service across all of their tech.

The service will apparently launch in ‘Summer 08’ for PS3 (and possibly PSP) with the service being added to Sony’s laptops and phones e.t.c with the service finally being brought across all Sony tech by 2010.

If any more exciting stuff does surface i’ll put it up but I doubt there will be.
