Sony have revealed that they will be trying out new payment methods when the Agency gets released, hopefully in 2009. Sony seem to have realised that if they want to attract the average console shooter fan they can’t charge a monthly subscription. SOE have said they will be using their other, more child friendly, MMO Free Realms to test the water on microtransactions as a singular revenue stream. In game advertising was also mentioned and a mix of both microtransactions and promotional stuff would seem like the best option for Sony to take.

Here’s the official quote from Kevin O’Hara from Sony Online Entertainment:

“We’re acutely aware that shooter players are not used to paying monthly fees, so I doubt we’ll go for an outright $15 a month … So we’re checking out Free Realms to see how they’re going to do with their micro-transactions, and we might incorporate some of that. We’ll definitely have some ad revenue models.”

Sounds good, i’m glad there’s not going to be a subscription fee. Nice to see Sony looking after the community. If this goes well, I hope they do something similar with DC Universe Online.
