Now when I say “giving” I mean charging us for. This week EA will roll out TWELVE, yes twelve, new downloadable content packs for their successful survival horror game Dead Space. As is the norm with DLC, some of it’s good and some is just plain poor. EA have struck a good balance here. They’re providing players with new and upgraded weapons. Good. They’re also selling graphical upgrades (i.e. skin packs for weapons). Not good. Hit the jump for the full list.

  • Astronaut Pack: Download the Astronaut Suit and Weapon Skin Pack, featuring an amazing Astronaut Suit and new skins for the Plasma Cutter, Pulse Rifle, and Ripper! — $3.00
  • Big Gun Pack: Download the Steam Punk Force Gun, the ultimate in Necromorph-killing destruction. — $1.00
  • Heavy Damage Pack: Download the Heavy Damage Weapon pack featuring a cool new look and massive firepower for the Plasma Cutter, Contact Beam, Pulse Rifle, and Ripper. — $3.00
  • Hot Rod Pack: Download the Hot Rod Weapon Skin Pack, featuring awesome flame graphics for the Flamethrower and Pulse Rifle. — $1.00
  • Military Pack: Download the Military Weapon Pack for a new look and enhanced power for all 7 Dead Space weapons. — $4.00
  • Pedestrian Pack: Download the Pedestrian Weapon Skin Pack, featuring a fresh new look for the Contact Beam, Plasma Cutter, and Ripper. — $1.50
  • Scorpion Pack: Download the Scorpion Pack featuring an upgraded Level 5 Suit and powered up Plasma Cutter, Line Gun, and Force Gun, all decorated in an awesome red Scorpion Skin. — $4.00
  • Scorpion Weapon Pack: Download the Scorpion Weapon Pack featuring a faster death-dealing Plasma Cutter, Line Gun, and Force Gun in awesome red skins. — $2.25
  • Speed Kills Pack: Download the Speed Kills Weapon Pack! Includes faster-firing Force Gun, Line Gun, and Plasma Cutter. — $2.25
  • Tank Pack: Download the Tank Pack featuring an upgraded Level 5 Suit and powered up Flamethrower, Force Gun, and Line Gun, all covered in Unitology script. — $4.00

PLAYSTATION®3 Exclusive Packs:

  • Obsidian Weapon Skin Pack: Download the exclusive Obsidian Weapon Skin Pack now, available only for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. Includes weapon skins in jet-black PLAYSTATION 3 colors for the Line Gun, Plasma Cutter, and Pulse Rifle. — $1.50
  • Obsidian Pack: Download the exclusive Obsidian Suit and Weapon Skin Pack now, available only for the PLAYSTATION®3! Includes an upgraded Level 5 suit, and weapon skins for the Line Gun, Plasma Cutter, and Pulse Rifle, all in jet-black PLAYSTATION®3 colors. — $3.00

This seems a lot, that’s beacuse it is. EA are practically trying to ram this stuff down gamers throats, something people generally don’t appreciate (there’s a joke in there somewhere ; ) ). Some of these packs seem reasonable buys, on the other hand others seem pointless and an easy revenue stream for EA. I have been informed that, for those going for platinum in this game, some of this content might give you an advantage, the good stuff anyway. This content will be out next week on the North American PS Store, there’s currently no date or pricing for us Europeans yet though.

This game looks awsome but I did something very foolish yesterday when I went to game crazy, I brought lego batman instead of dead space, ask me why I cant even tell you but I can only say that me and my son plays alot of ps3 games together so dead space is not in his age group at the moment.

I don’t like these types of games as they make me jump. lol Especially when playing in the dark with the surround on.

@ killquick Does your son play LBP? If so does he like it? 🙂

Yeah LBP would be a great choice for kids and parents to play. Miles better than a Wii and a hell of a lot cheaper.

I don’t really see how you can justify calling any of the new DLC “not good”. EA isn’t “ramming it down your throat” at all. You have to go and look for it. And if you aren’t happy paying a few bucks for new weapon skins then…wait for it…don’t buy them! A shocking idea, I know. They could simply not provide any DLC. Would that be better in your opinion, or do you just want them working for free?
