Rock Band 2 is the sequel to last years Rock Band if you couldn’t tell. I picked up the game this morning and have had about 3 hours with it. Color me impressed. Harmonix did a lot with this one and is worth the 60 USD if you have the original Rock Band instruments. Is it worth picking up the full 190 USD special edition bundle, even if you don’t have the original? Hit the jump to get a piece of my mind on the matter.

To answer those two questions, they are yes and maybe. If you already have the Rock Band instruments, then definitely pick it up. It’s worth every penny. If you’re new to the Rock Band scene and are looking to buy the full set, be careful. Guitar Hero World Tour comes out soon and you might like it better. It comes down to a matter of preference, mainly with the track list. Speaking of the track list, holy crap is this better than the original. You’re going to find bands such as AC/DC, System of a Down, Beastie Boys, Tenacious D, Motorhead, Metallica, The Who, and more. Rock Band 2 definitely delivers in the track list section, especially considering that every one is a master track. The only problem is, I haven’t gotten a chance to play all of them because, well, I just got it today.

Presentation wise, it’s pretty much about a carbon copy of last year with a few tweaks. It’s the same exact HUD as last year. Menus are easier to get around in, and getting into a game takes much less time. It’s a nice change, just nothing that will blow your mind. Graphically, again, it’s the same exact thing. You will notice NOTHING different about character models or anything of that matter. Thats not a bad thing though, last years looked as good as it had to, and this is no different.

If you play by yourself, there are ups and downs to this sequel (mostly ups). You can now go through the Band World Tour by yourself. It’s a great addition, but I also noticed that you can’t just play through the track list anymore. And honestly, I liked that in the original. As a single player I wasn’t looking to take on the World Tour, it just isn’t that much fun alone. But that’s your only option this year. Don’t get me wrong here people it’s definitely still fun, its just odd that they took that out. You can also do Band World Tour online. YES. This is finally what makes this game more awesome then the first. It was always a pain in the ass to get everyone in your band over your house or a friends house to get through World Tour, but now you and your buddies can do it from home. I’m not saying this is the ideal way to do it, but it’s a great and welcome addition. If you can, I definitely recommend getting all of your buddies together and playing, it’s much more fun.

If you’re new to the Rock Band scene and just picked this up, there are tutorial modes. They help a lot, especially on drums. Now I play drums on expert, I didn’t really need the tutorial. My buddy isn’t as good, but he tried it and it helped him loads so it obviously works well. Other than that, you’re getting the same game as last year with a few new features and an awesome new set list.

I’m going to try to get through this one quickly, so keep checking back for more and possibly a final review in the near future.

Sweet, Band World Tour Online sounds awesome. Definitely looking forward to playing this with Anthony and his bro next month.

Any more Chilli Peppers in this version Ryan? 🙂

Wish I could play drums on expert, although I’m doing alright on medium at the mo and have only been playing for 3 days.lol

Nice going Ryan. I didn’t expect you’d have the impressions up so quickly. Nice to see some of the most wanted features have been added in there. I pre-ordered my (PS3) copy from http://www.videogamesplus.com today which should only set me back £35, which is pretty sweet. October is going to be a great month for games.

Just thought i’d give the readers a heads up that Ryan is NOT playing the PS3 version as it isn’t out yet, he’s playing the 360 version. Now most games, i’d go PS3 but if you’ve packed a ton of money into the original on 360 then it’d be stupid not to get it on that.

And the fact that they are exactly the same on both platforms so it wouldn’t really make a difference.

Nice, I know Anthony and his little brother like that song. He is mint at it too, btw how old is your brother mate? From my limited time with the game my fave song at the mo is the one from Live Free Or Die Hard think it’s called “I’m So Sick”.

Is battle of the bands playable in online co-op too?

Darren what platform are you playing Rock Band on? When playing online we are short of 1 player on guitar or bass. 🙂

My bro is 11 man. Yeah it’d be cool if we could get a XeNonX band going too. I do like ‘Still Alive’ but I think my favorite track has to be ‘Tom Sawyer’. Glad there’s more Rush in RB2 as well as ‘Moving Pictures’ coming as DLC.
