The PS3mote? by Anthony Barlow

A few sites are reporting that Sony have today focus tested a new PlayStation product which is currently being dubbed the PS3mote (by me and a few others). This could be just a rumor but various sources have reported this. The demonstrator apparently showed off some games such as tennis and fencing.

This could obviously be just a rumor started by some attention hungry blogger but with Microsoft coming out with their Wii-esque peripheral and Apple apparently filing a patent for a similar remote product it wouldn’t surprise me if Sony did this too. If they do come out with this they better get some cool stuff to use with it otherwise it’ll be a bit pointless.

These remotes were currently using some sort of tripod which was connected to the PS3 via USB and set up in the middle of your gaming area. The remote was apparently said to be accurate and responsive and when the demonstrator crouched the on-screen character did the same. The remotes were also said to be like the Wiimote but without a nunchuck attachment

Apparently the focus group were given differing designs of the proposed ‘mote and were asked to choose which one looked and felt the best.

It is thought that these remotes have been in development for quite a while as the emails for this focus group apparently were sent out at the beginning of the year.

This is a copy of the email apparently sent out to people to participate in this focus group:

“Focus groups discussing PLAYSTATION®3 games are being held in your area. If you OWN a PLAYSTATION 3, we invite you to participate in a focus group. If you qualify, you will take part in a discussion lasting approximately two hours.

(NAME REMOVED) in ****** **** will be conducting these discussions. If you would like more information or would like to participate in the focus group:

Email your name and phone number to **** **** at *****@*******.com or call 1-800-***-**** ext. ****.

The PlayStation® Underground™”

Please Note: The design at the top of this post is a concept design by Emil G. Ryderup in September 2005
