Uncharted: The Movie Is Coming

[By Anthony]

With the success of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune it was highly unlikely we wouldn’t hear rumblings of a movie at some point, well that point is today. Speaking to Kotaku, movie producer, Avi Arad (or quite possibly his son Ari) said that the movie would not be an Indy clone and that the character of Nathan Drake was complicated. Arad said:

“He’s not a benevolent guy, but he’s certainly not a great guy. Indiana Jones was always a good guy and he relentlessly did the right thing. Drake is a guy who’s being hauled over to virtue throughout the game.”

Fair point, but personally the only complex thing about Nate his the way he tucks his shirt in (sorry).

Arad also said that the movie would not begin on the island and would add a little backstory to the trip and according to Arad would:

“explore some of the modern day piracy that’s going on today in South America.”

Personally I welcome an Uncharted movie, I think it could be a good move as long as it isn’t directed by Uwe Boll and dosen’t star Shia LeBouf i’m in.

More news when we get it.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith (Chasing Amy, Clerks 2) Recently Battled the MPAA’s Rating Board Over 2 Sex Scenes Involving co-stars Jason Mewes and Katie Morgan in His Upcoming Comedy “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”. Smith Appealed The MPAA’s NC-17 Rating Believing Artistically the Movie should not Incur any Further Cuts. After The Appeal’s Board Reviewed The Movie and Discussed Smith’s Concerns They Finally Agreed to Lower The Film to an “R” Rating, Allowing Audiences under 17 able to View The Movie With adult supervision.

Kevin Commented: “Anybody not inclined to see a movie with `Porno’ in the title is not going to see it, so it kind of regulates itself to a degree,” Smith said. “And anybody who is going is not going to be surprised by what they see.”

Del Toro Hearts ICO

[By Anthony]

Guillermo Del Toro, the acclaimed director of Pans Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies, is a fan of team ICO’s. In an interview with Edge magazine Del Toro said that “There are only two games I consider masterpieces: Ico and Shadow of the Colossus,”.

With a director of his calibre giving a massive thubs up to videogames, does this mean that hollywood might start considering making good movies from game franchises now? I don’t think so. What I do think, is after seeing what Del Toro did with Pans Labyrinth, he’d make a damn good director on adaptiations of both of the Team ICO games.

I’m saying watch this space for two fantastic videogame movies. Thanks to PS3 Fanboy for the image topping this post.

Lord of the rings blu-ray news

[By Steve M]

In a bit of blu-ray movie news, IGN have picked up on a comment made by a certain Peter Jackson that,

“We are working on a Blu-ray version of the LOTR trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won’t be this year.”

So next question for fans no doubt will be yes but which versions of the films?  If I was to be cynical for a moment I would expect the theatrical versions first, with the extended full monty versions at a later date, probably just in time for Christmas.

Lost Planet Movie Confirmed At Capcom’s Presser, With Special Guest Snake?

Whoo David Hayter and Capcom news now! It’s finally been confirmed, the movie adaptation of Lost Planet is being made. Lost Planet fanboys (is there any?) jump for joy. Anyway the big scoop (sausage?) is that, as you may know, Solid Snake David Hayter has penned the screenplay and that he was at the conference yesterday. Hayter’s screenplay and the fact this isn’t a videogame movie directed by Uwe Boll are the only reasons I want to see this.

The conference was only about the movie which is a bit crappy, but at least Snake was there to save the day.

No release date yet but i’d expect it to be sometime in 2009

Lost Planet Movie Almost Ready To Go Says Solid Snake Himself

More David Hayter news now and for some unknown reason I didn’t know he was penning the script for a move adaptation of Lost Plantet (probably because I don’t give a rat’s arse about Lost Planet). According to Mr. Hayter himself a deal with Warner Brothers is almost confirmed and is “just closing” but isn’t quite confirmed yet.

This is good news for fans of the Lost Planet franchise. Hayter has already written screenplays for X-Men which obviously makes him understand the type of culture surrounding games and such. Not only that he seems to like Lost Planet a fair bit too.

Hayter said: “There is gap in Hollywood between people who write good movies and those who appreciate good video games,” The voice of (undoubtedly) the best video game character ever (you can quote me on that). Hayter said he tries “to make an effort to take the essence of the game, keep as much of that as possible, and still put it into a proper film structure.”

With Solid Snake’s scriptwriting this movie does intrigue me now but not so much that i’ll be researching the Lost Planet franchise like some over eager recluse just to swot up on the lore of the thing. Although the game did always look pretty cool if it comes down to a tenner I might just pick it up.

Metal Gear Does Not Need A Movie Says David Hayter
July 8, 2008, 10:21 pm

David Hayter has, this week, been talking about Metal Gear becoming a movie. Here’s what he had to say:

“Does it need a movie? No. Do people want to collect the money that would be made from a movie? Sure. [laughs] I think that any time that a property is as valuable as this one, they’re going to do it. It’s not a question of if there is a need for a movie, it’s a question of how do they insure that the movie is good, and worth watching”.

He goes on to say how he’d make it a movie you’d want to watch.

“I think, because of the scenes — there’s so much movie in every Metal Gear game — it’s like, well, do we really need to see a bunch more talking about Metal Gear? As a movie adapter myself, I would never take those scenes verbatim and put them up on screen; it wouldn’t make any sense. I mean, a lot of times it doesn’t make any sense in the game. But you’re sort of speaking a language that all of these fans would understand.

In a movie, you’re going to want, for the lack of a better term, a more American style of dialogue. Tighter scenes. Themes that aren’t quite as ambiguous, that speak more to Americans. You’re really watching a Japanese perspective of American military power, where as it would be interesting to me to see the American perspective on what American military power has become. Now it’s kind of dubious right now, so it’s an interesting time to sort of explore that.

If you’re going to do it well, do it. If you’re going to put out some piece of crap, then no. Nobody needs that. Why waste your two hours when you can waste 18 watching Metal Gear 4. [laughter] No, not waste. Not when you can add quality to your life by playing Metal Gear Solid 4″. [smiles]

It looks like if the guys making the movie don’t pick Hayter and the movie is a piece of crap then fans (like me) will say that they should have let Hayter do the script. If they do pick Hayter it might look like Hayter is running the show and might not let the producer/director make the movie how they want it.

I still think they should cast Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn L.O.T.R.) as Snake.
