The Leipzig List – What’s Definitely Going To Be At The German Games Convention 2008

The German Games Convention (Leipzig) is just around the corner and thanks to our friends over at TheSixthAxis we have the full list (excluding surprises) of what’s gonna be at the show. The games below have been confirmed to be playable on the show floor:

Bionic Commando
Mirror’s Edge
Alone in the Dark (PS3)
FIFA 09
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

According to the guys over at TSA there are also set to be trailers and such for:

DC Universe Online
Far Cry 2
Free Realms
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
Need for Speed: Undercover
The Agency
‘A Codemasters Trailer’
‘An Activision Trailer’
Call of Duty: World at War
Dark Void
Street Fighter 4
Just Cause 2
Loco Roco 2 (PSP)
Prince Of Persia
Siren: Blood Curse
WipEout HD
Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Like I said there are hopefully going to be some surprises on the Sony front. I did have a tip off that Naughty Dog would make Leipzig the place they revealed Uncharted 2 along with some other stuff. We also expect to hear news on Heavy Rain amongst other things. If you are heading out to Germany for the event it’s also fairly likely that you’ll get your hands on LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2 and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift. That Nofi is a jammy git.

It’s sad to say it but Media Molecule are really starting to do my head in with all of these LittleBigPlanet reveals. It’s ncie too see that the guys have got some really cool stuff going into the game but it’s starting to get kinda old, not good. Anyway, today it was revealed by MM’s Mark Healy that the game would feature other elements besides fire and water.

You can set fire to pretty much anything, you can also make things ‘electrified’, or turn them to gas, which is very cool… By water, I assume you mean ‘real water’ that acts like real water does! This isn’t in the initial release, but we have some cool ideas for how to integrate it into a possible future DLC — of course, it will have a slight LBP twist to it… There is fog that you can tweak, and you could pretty easily fake a thunderstorm with the right sound effect objects and some ‘emitted’ rain drops or something.

Once again something cool from the guys over at Media Molecule and something else to look forward to in LBP. Alex Evans wants another really big reveal at Leipzig next week, i’m wondering if there’s anything more to talk about.

Prison Break Fans Rejoice? [Update]

Or perhaps not, as apparently with the US dvd release of season 3 comes a flier proclaiming the arrival of game based on the popular series, the possible downside? its being developed by Brash Entertainment, the people behind such forgettable titles as Alvin and the Chipmunks, Jumper: Griffins Story and of course Space Chimps.  Naturally we’ll cut the title a little slack until we really have reason to start sharpening the pitch forks, but after the universally panned Lost game lets just say expectations are low for the time being.

[Update] – It has also been confirmed via the same flyer that the game will be coming to both PS3 and 360 in Feburary 2009. A quote from Robert Knepper (Theodore “T-Bag” Bagweell in the show) from last year also aluded to a game of the popular series.

“I don’t think it’s quite done, but I heard that on the wind last year that they were trying to do it,” said Knepper. “You know the whole thing with an escape, they were working on a videogame where you plot your own escape from prison.”

Batman: Arkham Asylum Details, Screens

Earlier this week it was announced (via Game Informer) that Eidos would be making a new Batman game. I tought EA held the liscence to make games based of the DC franchise, but alas I was wrong. EA only have the rights to make videogames based on the Batman movies (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) and it now looks like Eidos have exclusive rights to the Batman graphic novels.

I can’t wait to see what Pandemic can do with the Dark Knight lisence but i’m noty expecting the best. This game on the other hand seems to have one key feature which could definitely have a major positive influence on the game, it’s writer. Comic book writer Paul Dini is going to be writing the story for the game and from what i’ve heard from comic book fans this is a really, really good thing. There were some other villains revealed (aside from The Joker) which sound like they could present some very interesting scenarios. Batman will be facing up agaist: The Riddler, The Penguin, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Herley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Personally i’m epecting more to be revealed closer to the games release.

The game, being developed by Rocksteady studios and publishe by Eidos, revolves around Gothams infamous Arkham Asylum which houses the cities most dangerous criminals. The Joker has taken over the Asylum and it’s up to Batman to obviously, save the day. Some details were revealed about the game along with the story and I was surprised to see that, unlike most new superhero games, it isn’t an open world game and confines the player to the Asylum itself. It seems like a great new direction for the superhero genre and, if it works out, could be something other franchises might adopt. Now I know you’re thinking that a superhero game set in one area sounds dumb but when the game was revealed earlier this week there were some pretty bold statements made. The game was said to be more like ‘The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay’ and ‘BioShock’, both of which were highly acclaimed by the press and gamers alike.

According to Kotaku, the game will not only be about combat but will include investigative sections (e.g. puzzles) which could break the manotony that many combat heavy games suffer from. It was also said that combat would focus on stealth and speed and that the combat would only use three buttons, this might sound simple but if it’s pulled off right it could be really effective. Boss battles were also mentioned, with some being combat based and others similar to those seen in the Zelda franchise, using particular gadgets and gizmos to bring down foes.

The game is set to be realeased sometime in 2009. This sounds like it could be a new and exciting approach to the superhero genre and seems like it could be a welcome change from past games in this genre. It seems like the game is a bit of a way off yet but juding from the screens that Rocksteady accidentally released today (luckily they were snapped up by a NeoGaf poster) it is definitely going to look great.

The game will be appearing on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

New SOCOM: Confrontation Beta Information
August 15, 2008, 2:37 pm

With the Socom Beta due to kick off in the States early September, David Brothers over at Socom.com has let slip a little info on what will be involved

As planned right now, the beta is going to involve Crossroads and Crossroads Large, the 16 and 32 player variations. You’ve seen the screens and videos, and maybe even figured out the general layout of the map, but you’ll get a month to play on it yourself.

Beyond that, you’ll have access to the full range of game modes. Extraction, Elimination, Suppression, and everything else are going to be represented. You’ll be able to adjust the settings how you like, as well. Lock out certain weapons, or even entire weapon classes, if you like. If you hate M4s for some reason, you can shut them out of your game.

Character customization will be in, as well, from body armor to camo to headgear and beyond. There will also be clan support and stat tracking, but be aware that these will all be reset at launch.

Think of the beta as a test drive. It’ll be the first time the gaming community at large, and SOCOM.com members in particular, get a crack at the game. The month’ll let the team check gameplay, server stress, and a host of other important things. It’ll be an interesting ride.

Yes you read it right, you can lock out any weapon you like, or don’t like for that matter, so for me that’s no shotguns allowed, gone, no more, forget it, go find another another toy to play with because i’m taking mine home with me.  Yes that’s right i hate the dam things whatever the game, oh yes I’ve suffered an all too quick demise on far far to many occasions to the hands of a shotgun wielding opponent, who to be fair could of probably taken me out with some harsh language and a rolled up copy of the Telegraph.

Now Now Dont Worry About Your Home Beta Invite

With the first batch of “random” invitations to the EU Home beta being dispatched yesterday, it’s a fair chance you did’nt receive yours.  Well as the good book says “DONT PANIC” as it would seem there are more invites to come over the next few weeks as the beta progresses.  Speaking on the official playstation forums Mr Trill, who is part of the community team, had this to say when asked about the invitation situation.

“I think it is at random.

However I know that they are going to keep on inviting people.

More and more each week.”

So those just itching to start decorating their virtual apartment,  creating their online double, or the one handed gaming types relishing the prospect of harrasing any vaguely female avatar they come across, well take a little heart from this and that magic email might be dropping into your inbox very soon.

Age Of Dreams On The Way

For the elf-abusers among you Chimera Entertainment have today announced they are working on a new multiplatform rpg called “Age Of Dreams” from the solitary screenshot released so far i’m going with a Dungeon Siege type game, which is perhaps not a bad thing.  No publisher as of yet but with Leipzig imminent you can be sure the developers will be courting all and sundry to get their game onto shelves.

From Chimera Entertainment:

“Chimera Entertainment, an independent Munich game developer, is announcing the action role playing game “Age of Dreams” for next-gen consoles and PC.

Munich, 14.08.2008 – Unusual hero development, thrilling combat, versatile sandbox-game play and a novel online experience!
After their innovative title “Windchaser”, Chimera Entertainment once again mixes familiar role play elements with unique ideas and wraps them up with a fresh and extraordinary look.

Creative Director Alexander Kehr is convinced of the “Age of Dreams” concept: “We came up with an entirely new class system, one that is diverse and gives the player a lot of freedom to experiment with.” Managing Director Hendrik Lesser adds: “With our first PC title, the team has matured as well as gained a lot of experience and self confidence. We are looking forward to the challenge of a cross platform title.”

Chimera Entertainment is going to present “Age of Dreams” to interested publishers at the games convention in Leipzig.”

Bionic Commando PS3 News!

Earlier this week John Diamonon from Capcom posted some Bionic Commando stuff over on Sony’s official PlayStation blog. He confirmed that Capcom are working on a patch to get trophies into Bionic Commando: Rearmed. This was rumored a few weeks ago but it is now confirmed and is something I can’t wait for. I love the game and bought it from the U.S. store today and I think trophies would definitely add to the experience. He also said that they [Capcom] would be trying to make said trophies retroactive, which is good.

Other big Bionic Commando news now and it has also been revealed that the PS3 version of the game has an extra exclusive challenge room. I have tried the first two challenge rooms and couldn’t really get the hang of ‘em but you can’t complain about free content.

Walmart Gets It’s Own LBP Trailer

First Amazon and now Walmart (ASDA to UK peeps) has got it’s own trailer for Media Molecule’s highly anticipated LittleBigPlanet. The trailer (above) is obvuiously being used to capture the attention of the Wii owners casual gamer and obviously Walmart is the ideal place the catch non-gamers off guard and make them want to buy a PS3.

Hopefully it’ll work i’d really love to see the PS3 dominate the Wii when LBP gets released.

The Details From My Interview With EA’s Greg Baker – More FIFA 09
August 15, 2008, 12:24 am
Filed under: Event Coverage, Gaming News | Tags: , , ,

Well like I said I didn’t have any recording equiptment so I couldn’t transcribe the interview with Greg from EA, but I did make some notes so that’ll have to do.

Well the first thing I asked him about was this years cover stars (which by the way have not yet been revealed) he actually yold me who they were, which came as a surprise. As I expected Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and AC Milan’s Ronaldiniho are once again gracing the game’s cover. I kind of expected it but it still comes as a surprise.

I then moved on to animations, something which Greg seemed really well informed about. He talked about how the guys in Canada used stuntment to perform some of the animations for tackles and players falling to the ground. From what i’ve seen they look really good and definityely add to the realistic feel the game is trying to put accross.

Now you might have seen that I have put some of the United squad’s overall ratings in my impressions post. I was talking with Greg about some of the ratings and ‘missing’ players. He told me that the build was not the latest build and that many of the ratings and squads would be refined and updated before the game comes out. He also mentioned that all of the summer transfers would be making it into the game for the October 4th ship date so there’ll be no squad updates at launch.

One of the best (and at times worst) features of FIFA 08 was the ‘Be A Pro’ game mode. I really liked the way it worked in the last game and I was told that now EA have expanded the mode to support 10 players on each team. That means there’ll be 20 PS3’s synching up at one time to play these macthes, which I assumed would cause problems. This is apparently not the case, Greg said that when this mode was being tested they (EA) were worried that it wouldn’t work and also that players would not stick to their assigned roles. Once again, this wasn’t the case and Greg said that he was pleasantly surprised how disiplined the players were and that they stuck to their assigned roles well and most of the matches players functioned as a team should. Another interesting new addition to the ‘be a pro’ game modes is that players will now be able to play 4 seasons as an individual player in the new ‘be a pro seasons’ mode. This sounds like it would be similar to Madden’s ’superstar mode’ and hopefully it will expand to be as big as the manager mode (15 years, i think).

One of the nice new things revealed was that players will have the ability to set what their ‘arena’ would look like. Greg mentioned that players would be able to have themed arenas e.g. a Mexican one. This sounds like an unimportant, but cool feature that allows players to personalize their game, which is nice I guess.

I asked Greg about the improvement of the game over the past few years and he commented on how PES and FIFA have ‘changed roles’ if you like, with EA’s game becoming more of a sim and PES becoming more arcadey. Greg said that this was a change that was very much liked by fans and also made people switch to FIFA from Pro Evo. He talked about the changes in 09 and said that the team had made 250 new changes to the game, how many of these will be significant is somewhat yet to be seen but they seem to be working well.

The last thing I talked about was the PS3 exclusive feature of FIFA 09, something which Greg would not divulge no matter how much I asked. I did ask if it was perhaps a ‘jumpers for goalposts’ mode within ‘Home’. He thought it would be a nice idea but also said that this was not the exclusive feature. he went on to say that we should hear something out of Leipzig about said exclusive.

Well that about raps it up. It is a shame that I couldn’t get a transcription of the interview but you still got all of the info from it in a more concise form. It’ll be cool to see what the exclusive feature is and it’s nice to see that the team are working hard on making this the best footy game out there and from what i’ve played it definitely looks like it could be.
