The first batch of the PAL region ‘Platinum’ PS3 games has been announced and dated. The games will be dropping on August 1st (in time for ‘new’ SKU) and the first batch will be similar to the ‘Greatest Hits’ range available in the US.
The games confirmed were:
- MotorStorm
- Resistance: FoM
- Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
- Assasins Creed
- Virtua Tennis 3
Now those were the only games announced but it’s quite likely the rest of the ‘Greatest Hits’ range will make it to PAL regions along with the other unconfirmed expectants: Folklore, Ratchet & Clank:ToD, and Heavenly Sword.
The games will be going on sale on August 1st and will be £20, which is really cool. I’m surprised that WarHawk wasn’t confirmed but I wonder if it’ll get a price drop on PSN too? Don’t you just hate the yellow/silver box art?

I did say hopefully, didn’t I? Anyway, it looks like Europe won’t be getting video downloads on their PS3’s in 2008 at all. David Reeves of Sony has announced that PAL territories won’t be getting a video download service this year.
This will not come to the PAL markets this year, but Sir Howard Stringer has made the commitment that non-games will come to all regions in due course and it will. The dates for video content will come later this year. For us, and I think you appreciate most of you European, that local content is important, and that’s what working on right now.
It suck’s, and it sucks bad. It’s probably legal stuff and, although my predictions are usually crap, I’m guessing we’ll see it Q1 2009.

Resident Evil 5 seems to have taken most people at the show by storm and now Capcom have released some new screens. It does look really good and I could buy it, even though survival horror isn’t my thing.

This week Sony has lost a BIG exclusive with FFXIII but has gained a pretty cool one. 2K will apparently be releasing something called “Challenge Rooms” as not to mess with the story of BioShock whilst still providing players with some new content. These “rooms” will be self contained areas apparently designed for you to use your plasmids to do some puzzle solving. Hopefully this’ll work quite well but at least us PS3 owners get something good.

The 80GB PS3 never materialized in Europe (or Oceania) since it was announced and released in America last year. After Sony announced their pricedrop replacement for the 40GB model at their E3 presser they have now announced that the 80GB model will finally hit “All PAL territories (that’s Europe & Australia, basically) on August 27th.
I couldn’t find any specifics before (when I posted about the initial announcement) I now have them courtesy of Wikipedia. The ‘new’ 80GB SKU will be a ‘cut down’ model of the original 80GB and will loose some of the features the original had, below is a list of the aformentioned specs.
- 2 USB ports (Original had 4)
- It is WiFi enabled
- Will not have flash card readers (The original did)
- Will have chrome trim
- No SCAD support (Was included in the first 80GB consoles)
- Not backwards compatible (The original had emulation software)
There you have it, it is a scaled down version of the original line of 80GB PS3’s but gladly it’ll be retailing at £299.99, which is the price of the 40GB PS3. No word on the DualShock being available in the new bundle but everything else is the same, why not that?

I thought this might be the case earlier today and now it has been confirmed. Sony’s new video store has been region locked to allow users in the United States only. I was hoping I could get some cheap rentals but it looks like i’ll have to wait for the store to come to us in Europe.
This is not good but then again, blu-rays are (mostly) region locked so why didn’t I see this coming?
Hopefully we’ll see it soon, but for now there’s always proxies
