Firmware 2.30

Yes the highlight for myself and many others in today’s PS3 firmware was the new PS Store but this new update added another fairly cool feature too.

Firmware 2.30 also added DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-Ray movies which means the amazing visuals will now be combined with amazing sound quality too,  increasing the movie watching experience for PS3 users.

I found this in the information on Sony’s Playstation Blog.

“DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space.”

It seems like Sony seems to be stepping up their game on the request front as this is a big thing people wanted to be included in a new update. Here’s hoping (like many of you) that the next update will include in-game XMB.

I think IGN’s Ryan Clements put it best (possibly) when he said that the PS3 was like the THX noise. Basically meaning that Sony are slowly building up its features before the big, loud holy grail like ending.

Yep, the eagerly awaited new look Playstation store hit consoles in Firmware 2.30 but is it up to scratch? Well yes and no. The store works and is easy to browse but i’ve found that not all of the images are loading for some things. Maybe it’s just my really slow internet connection (it probably is) either way it’s a nice addition. I just need some new content so can’t wait for Thursday. There were some surprises as a Super Stardust HD add-on hit the store today along with 3 Dropkick Murphy’s tracks for Guitar Hero 3, A demo of Sega Superstars Tennis and trailers for Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Lost Planet. Other than that no new content seems to have appeared on any of the other stores but i’ll be keeping my eyes peeled throughout today. Thursday looks like it will be a good day for PS3 owners though.

I also found out that Sony sneakily have given their PC store an update although it’s purely cosmetic but I guess not much needs to be changed there.
